About Us

The National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease is a collaboration between four New Zealand scientific and government agencies, Biosecurity New Zealand (a division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry), Crown Research Institutes AgResearch and Environmental Science and Research (ESR) plus state-owned enterprise AsureQuality.

The national centre link on a single site:

  • the existing Biosecurity New Zealand Investigation and Diagnostic Centre (previously referred to as MAF's National Centre for Disease Investigation)
  • ESR Science Centre (including the National Influenza Centre and other laboratories)
  • AsureQuality's biosecurity facilities currently at Wallaceville
  • AgResearch's infectious disease diagnostic team

The agencies work collaboratively on specific projects and research related to biosecurity and infectious disease but will retain their independence.  NCBID is New Zealand's largest concentration of bacteriologists, virologists, and epidemiologists specialising in human and animal health.
