Improving New Zealand's capability to safeguard human and animal health and protect the economy.

In 2004 the New Zealand Government agreed to the establishment of the National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease (NCBID). NCBID is a collaboration between four agencies:

NCBID provides centralised coordination and emergency response for disease outbreaks, biosecurity investigations, chemical and biological threats and events.

ESR's science underpins the health and justice systems in New Zealand.

Daily our scientists are helping to:

  • solve crime;
  • track disease;
  • ensure food is safe to eat;
  • and water is safe to drink.

ESR is New Zealand's leading provider of scientific services related to public health, environmental health and forensic science.  The organisation provide consulting, analytical and research services to meet the needs of government, industry and the public.

ESR's role in the National Centre - Biosecurity and Infectious Disease
ESR will utilise multi-disciplinary integrated skills in communicable disease, public health surveillance and forensic science to provide a centralised coordination and emergency response for disease outbreaks, biosecurity issues and chemical and biological events.

Specifically ESR will contribute capability, expertise and skills in the following areas:

  • Biosecurity and disease
    • Investigating infectious disease threats (eg SARS, Avian flu)
    • Disease surveillance, modelling and forecasting
    • Specialist laboratory services
  • Counter terrorism
    • Identifying and investigating biological and chemical threats
